Create a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex (LGBTI) Inclusive Service

The HOW2 create a LGBTI inclusive service program aims to support the development of health and human services that are inclusive of lesbiangaybisexualtrans* and intersex clients and staff.

The HOW2 program is based on a set of six national standards for health and human services developed by GLHV in conjunction with Quality Innovation Performance (QIP) The program is also informed by the Victorian Department of Health publication, Well Proud: A guide to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex inclusive practice for health and human services (2009)

The program involves a series of 4 training sessions to coach participants through the practical steps involved in enhancing LGBTI inclusive practice in their service. Issues covered include:

  1. Auditing your service
  2. Consulting consumers
  3.  Educating colleagues
  4. Developing and implementing an action plan
  5. Managing obstacles
  6. Evaluating changes.

Important: Completion of this training program does not result in the awarding of a Rainbow Tick.

To achieve a Rainbow Tick, services must be formally accredited through an external process undertaken by QIP (

However, the HOW2 program addresses the six standards that form the basis of that process. More information will be provided in the sessions or participants can contact QIP directly:

The program involves 4 x 4.5 hour sessions that are held 6-8 weeks apart. The sessions are facilitated by ACON training staff with experience in LGBTI inclusive practice.

Tasks are assigned to each organisation prior to the first session and at the end of sessions 1,2 and 3. These tasks involve practical activities at participant’s workplaces. Cost is $990 plus GST per participant for the 4 session course.

It is important that the same staff members from each organization attend all four workshops. This level of engagement and continuity supports all participants through the process

Report Guide – 2017

ACON staff will identify and distribute a range of useful general resources in the sessions. Other participants will also be important sources of information regarding local initiatives and resources.

Phone/email support is provided by ACON facilitators to participants between sessions to assist with the change process.

At the end of the 4 sessions, participants will have identified issues relevant to their own organisation and developed, as well as partially implemented, a plan for inclusive practice. It is suggested that participants submit this plan in the form of a report for their organisation.

We prefer a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 4 participants from each organisation to attend to support this process as it assists with sustainability, however we recognise this is not always possible.

To achieve meaningful change as a result of this program, it is important that these organisational delegates have the capacity (commitment, organisational resources and access to high level decision-making) to affect changes in their organisation
